Couples Fishing Charters in Islamorada | A Fishing Guru

A Young Couple Fishing at Sunset near Islamorada, FL

A private fishing charter in Islamorada is one of the better ways to spend a day together in the Florida Keys. It's just the two of you and your captain on the water — no crowds, no agenda forced on you by other guests, and nowhere else to be. Whether you've fished before or not, our captains make the experience accessible and genuinely enjoyable. Everything is included. You pick the trip style; we handle the rest.

Two Charter Options — Pick Your Adventure

Inshore and backcountry trips run on Little Guru, our 24' Shallow Sport. This is sight fishing in skinny water — quiet, close, and visually engaging. You'll cover mangrove edges, grassy flats, and sheltered channels in Florida Bay. Tarpon, redfish, snook, and seatrout are the primary targets. It's a focused, hands-on style of fishing that rewards patience and accuracy. Ideal for couples who want a calmer, more scenic experience. Starts at $600 for a half day.

Offshore trips run on Big Guru, our 39' Contender. Open Atlantic water, longer runs, bigger fish. Mahi-mahi, wahoo, tuna, and sailfish, depending on the season. This is the trip for couples who want the full deep-sea experience. Starts at $900 for a half day, $1,750 for a full day. Up to 6 guests per boat, but as a couple, you'll have it entirely to yourselves.

What Makes a Couples Charter Special

Private charters strip out everything that makes group fishing feel like a compromise. Your captain plans the day around your preferences, your experience level, and what's biting. You fish at your own pace. If one of you wants to put the rod down and just watch for a while, that's fine. If you want to stay on a productive reef longer than planned, the captain adjusts.

Our captains — Ryan Kroonenburg, Dylan McClaugherty, and Travis Camacho — know these waters and how the bite shifts day to day. They communicate clearly, explain what they're doing and why, and run the kind of trip where you leave knowing more than when you arrived.

Best Species for Couples to Target in Islamorada

Mahi-mahi is the most popular offshore target for couples — they fight hard, show up in schools, and have a visual quality to the fight (lots of color, lots of jumping) that makes every hookup feel like an event. Tarpon is the signature Islamorada experience: a large, acrobatic fish in shallow water that's technically demanding and genuinely exciting to encounter.

For couples who prefer a more relaxed day, nearshore reef fishing for snapper and grouper produces consistent action throughout the trip. The fish are willing, the water is calm, and there's plenty to eat at the end of the day.

Unforgettable Fishing Charters for Couples

For couples looking for a laid-back day on the water, an inshore backcountry trip on Little Guru is hard to beat. You'll explore the calm, shallow flats and mangrove creeks that make Islamorada famous — targeting species like tarpon, redfish, and snook in scenery that's as memorable as the fishing. It's an intimate, unhurried experience where both of you get plenty of time on the rod, whether you're seasoned anglers or picking up a pole for the first time.

FAQs

Do we need fishing experience?

No. Our captains work with all experience levels — from first-time anglers to experienced fishers looking to target a specific species. If neither of you has fished before, expect a short orientation at the dock, clear instruction on the water, and a captain who will coach you through every step.

Can we customize the trip for a special occasion?

Yes. Let us know when you book if you're celebrating an anniversary, birthday, or other occasion. We'll do what we can to make the day work around it. Bring whatever you'd like to have on the boat — food, drinks, decorations — we'll make space.

What's the best trip length for a couples charter?

A half-day (4 hours) is solid for a relaxed, focused experience — enough time on the water without a full-day commitment. For offshore fishing, a full day (8 hours) gives the captain more range to chase pelagic fish and work multiple spots. Most couples doing their first offshore trip opt for the full day.

What's included?

All bait, tackle, and fishing licenses. Bottled water and ice. Fish cleaning and bagging at the dock. Gratuity for the captain is not included but is appreciated.

What should we bring?

Reef-safe sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, hats, light clothing, non-slip shoes, snacks, and any additional drinks. For offshore trips, bring motion sickness medication if either of you tends to be affected by boat motion.

Is the inshore or offshore trip better for beginners?

Inshore is typically the easier introduction to fishing — calm water, shorter runs, and species that bite consistently. That said, offshore is manageable for beginners with a good captain, and the mahi-mahi fishery in particular is forgiving enough that first-timers catch fish regularly.
